9th Annual Iron City Duathlon 2013
Nearly 90 people came out for the 9th Annual Iron City Duathlon, hosted by the Menihek Nordic Ski Club in partnership with the Town of Labrador City. This community event which combines biking and running is a contest that is very popular, you can go as a team or do the whole event yourself. Participants were from Labrador West and Fermont.
Gerry Rideout, Chairperson said, "Menihek would like to thank the organizing committee, the volunteers, the groups and organizations who assisted, especially the H.O.W.L.S, The RNC, Search & Rescue and Labrador City Firemen, and also the sponsors who contributed to the success of the event."
Mallory Martin won the new bike donated by Allard Dstributing. The $100 cash prizes were won by Irene Rice, Tim O'Brien and Kathy Curran. Medals were handed out by Mayor Karen Olford for all categories. Prize draws took place for young and old with participation medals awards to all youth. A social event following the races saw lots of heathy foods and drinks disappear in a hurry.
Fastest times recorded for the overall event, 15 km Bike and six km Run was Konrad Kuhne 57:19.7 mins and Emily Craigen 1:03.20.0 mins. Team mixed was Bernard Dupont and Emy Desrosiers 1:00:50.5 mins.
This year the event moved from Father's Day and started earlier at 11:00am. It was a nice sunny day but big wind made it a difficult bike going out on Tamarack, the trailer court section and the Smokey Mountian Hill did not get any easier.
Thank you to all the volunteers who make the event stand out and go like clockwork. A special note of thanks to Andree Morrison back from United Arab Emirates for volunteering.
Looking forward to next year, start training now and bring a friend.
